Numerous industries and technologies depend directly or indirectly on the development of new energy storage systems: electric cars need powerful batteries, stationary electricity storage systems can stabilize electrical grids that are fed by renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic systems or wind turbines, which fluctuate over time. Germany ranks very highly internationally in materials research and process development for energy storage. The Fraunhofer Center ZESS is working to develop innovative solutions to socio-ecological challenges and deliver efficient, climate-friendly answers. To this end, the Fraunhofer Center brings together the expertise of three Fraunhofer Institutes and the Technical University of Braunschweig and benefits from the established local research infrastructure. Part of the research work of Fraunhofer ZESS takes place in the building of the Lower Saxony Research Center for Vehicle Technology NFF at the Technical University of Braunschweig.

The new Fraunhofer ZESS building will create a unique infrastructure and research platform that is necessary for the development and implementation of future energy storage systems, from prototypes to industrialization, and will provide space for over 100 employees. Fraunhofer ZESS currently employs 75 people, more than 50 of whom are already based in Braunschweig. Researchers will be able to use the new technical facilities and laboratories from 2026.

The Fraunhofer Center for Energy Storage and Systems ZESS is headquartered at Braunschweig Research Airport – at the heart of an excellent research infrastructure and in close proximity to the Technical University of Braunschweig and the Battery LabFactory Braunschweig (BLB). Here, researchers from different institutes work together on pioneering storage technologies and their transfer into industrial applications.
In addition, each of the three participating Fraunhofer Institutes – Fraunhofer IST, IFAM, and IKTS – contributes proven expertise to the center at its respective location. Together, they form a strong network that combines all key competencies for mobile and stationary energy storage solutions, from material development to system integration.
