The design phase brings together all the results and findings from the previous stages. The design development process at Fraunhofer ZESS covers all phases on the way to a real sodium-nickel chloride or Li-ion battery: from CAD installation space concepts and design studies to detailed module and system models with complete sets of drawings and parts lists suitable for manufacturing and assembly. The close coupling of design with electrical planning and validation allows project-relevant design decisions to be made at an early stage, saving costs and time and thus avoiding unnecessary iteration steps.
In the development of battery cells, modules, and systems, it is important to carry out commissioning, validation, stress, and long-term tests. At Fraunhofer ZESS, test benches and test facilities are designed for this purpose. The realization of labor-saving production facilities for later battery production is also part of the design portfolio.
