Assembly of solid-state cells

When assembling solid-state cells, fundamental process expertise and plant engineering from the field of classic lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes can be drawn upon. However, the main advantages of solid-state cells arise from the elimination of electrolyte filling and a significant reduction in the time-consuming and energy-intensive formation process. On the other hand, the large number of promising material systems, cell designs, and process routes that need to be investigated places high demands on the flexibility of the production infrastructure. Fraunhofer ZESS therefore plans to implement a particularly flexible process chain in which different types of solid-state cells can be assembled automatically in a dry room atmosphere. Production technologies and cell assembly equipment are being scaled up from laboratory to industrial scale in collaboration with equipment manufacturers. In addition to technological issues, the focus is particularly on reducing manufacturing costs and increasing resource efficiency and sustainability.
